Clean Your Room and the Giant Child, at Ramakech

Come visiting time, he’ll likely be right there, in pyjamas and slippers. A giant Hybridus with a palm-tree head, the child happily lets visitors into his open-air bedroom, still scattered with the games of a young giant.

Everything in his room is at least six times bigger than in ours, capturing how space feels from the tiny scale of a toy. Our own height shrinks to that of a doll, whose house sits on the floor at the foot of an enormous, welcomingly oversized bed. It’s a surprising full-scale reproduction of the artist’s parents’ first apartment, in Ménilmontant, Paris.

“Clean your room!”, his father used to say, often. Three words with a strong, lasting echo, which Fourtou chose to explore through this playful, offbeat self-portrait staging.
