The Upside-Down house in Marrakech
The Upside-Down House, a signature installation of the Ramakech sculpture park in Marrakech, sits frozen in the grass , overturned, resting on one edge of its roof. Architecture, furniture, objects: everything is inverted, tilted, disorienting. You walk on what was once the ceiling, and climb up in order to go down.
The building is a full-scale replica of the small house that artist Jean-François Fourtou’s grandfather rented for several summers in Fouras-les-Bains, in the Charente-Maritime region of France. It also stands as a powerful symbol of the place where they shared their final years together, and of his grandfather’s last breath. This immersive experience in Marrakech is the grandson’s tribute , a loving memory his grandfather might send down from above.

Designed by French artist Jean-François Fourtou, the Upside-Down House belongs to a series of monumental works questioning our relationship to space, childhood and memory. By inverting the codes of domestic architecture, Fourtou turns a familiar place into strange territory. Visitors lose their bearings, their bodies reorient , and it’s precisely within that vertigo that the emotion is born.
The work speaks to other installations across the park, notably the Giant’s House and the Nanitos, forming a coherent world where scale is upended and imagination takes over.
